About
Well I suppose that I had better introduce myself……
Hello, my name is Clare Davies and this is my blog Pre-industrial revelations.
The story to the name is about 2 years ago I started crafty things again for the first time since university. I started with a tapestry/needlepoint cushion cover; you know the type sewing by numbers. Then, I had an urge to doing some knitting. I like knitting because I can watch telly at the same time and I like telly. After a couple of cardigans, I thought I what to have a go at crochet. Now this was a challenge because I’m left handed which is why my mum and aunts didn’t teach me as a girl (they are all right-handers) and all the books are for right-handers. However, not only did I learn, but taught a right hander to crochet as well, and then she went and looked at the book and taught me how to do it properly!
In between all this, I started on my patchwork journey. Patchwork quilts were these beautiful things that were always pictured hung up in trees or blowing gently in the breeze on washing lines. They were colourful and I loved the patterns and I wanted to make one. I was told that there was no way because of the amount of work involved that I would finish it. I finished it. I am now in the quilting process of an even larger one. I find patchwork and quilting almost compulsive.
Monty Don made a series called “Master Crafts” and one of the programmes was all about weaving. This looked fascinating and my partner bought me a ridged heddle loom for my birthday which has led to spinning to get the yarn……..and it seems to me that I am travelling to a time of production that existed before the Industrial Revolution and as each craft takes time in the processes it become as a meditation which leads to revelations.
It is these revelations; it is this journey that makes the contents of this blog.
